A thorough dental exam allows the dentist to determine the level of your oral health, and whether or not any dental procedures are necessary in order to help you achieve or maintain it. Each tooth is checked for any signs of decay or damage, and the surrounding gum tissue is examined for signs of gum disease.
The hygienist checks the gums for pockets, which can indicate gingivitis or a problem with the gums. Once your teeth and gums have been thoroughly examined, you will receive a professional cleaning. Depending on the condition of your gums, the hygienist will determine the type of cleaning you will receive. Certain stages of gum disease may require a more extensive cleaning.
After your teeth have been cleaned, the dentist will check your teeth one more time. If there were any problems detected, a treatment plan will be created and the details will be explained to you.
